INDONESIA – In his timeless masterpiece Al-Hikam, the great Sufi master Ibnu ‘Athoillah sheds light on the profound journey of the soul toward the Divine.
In passage 288, he describes a rare group of individuals, those who have reached the peak of spirituality and become completely absorbed in the remembrance of Allah, to the point of forgetting all creation.
These enlightened seekers, known as the people of haqiqah (ultimate truth), are described as servants who face divine reality directly.
For them, the light of truth shines brightly, guiding them on a path where worldly traces fade away.
They are immersed in divine radiance, losing sight of the created world, and their forgetfulness of the temporal outweighs their remembrance of it.
“They are those who stand before the unveiled reality, who walk firmly upon the path, and who have arrived at its summit. They are drowned in the ocean of light, such that no trace of creation remains visible. They forget the world far more than they remember it, and their nearness to Allah eclipses all distance,” (Al-Hikam, 288).
Ibn ‘Athoillah further explains that the spiritual path unfolds in stages:
1. Knowledge – studying and understanding Allah and religion.
2. Experience – directly tasting and encountering divine realities.
3. Internalization – living with constant awareness of Allah’s presence.
4. Union – transcending creation, reaching a state of complete absorption in Allah.
The ahlul haqiqah, those who have forgotten creation, embody the final stage: union with the Divine. They represent the pinnacle of the spiritual journey, where true peace and ultimate joy are found.
This teaching from Al-Hikam serves as a timeless reminder: every soul is invited to strive for spiritual ascent, to pray, and to persist in remembrance, until it tastes the sweetness of nearness to Allah.
Only then can one experience the deepest form of happiness and serenity in life.
